... Having titled it that I've little idea what to post. I was going to post this inspirational quote I found in this other blog,but had to jump through hoops of dewm, time-delayed thanks to my email, in order to change my password, and I've no idea what the quote was now. I think I found it by a miss-click.

I kinda fancy coding right now, either coding a radio object in Second Life or playing with Scheme, which has this curious macro called amb (short for ambiguous) which can actually force the program to backtrack until it finds a way to make it's answers come out right! I need to install a version of Scheme that actually ships with amb before I can play with it though, and I'm too sleep-deprived to bother at the mo.

Seriously, lupine52 noticed I hadn't posted in a while & sent me a "livejournal nudge". Nice to be noticed, thanks man.

Not much to report, 'cept that I've started posting in MZDM again, I've been missing roleplay. I do a little in SL but it's never happening at any kind of time that's sane for me, and even when it is any continuations are usually later in the day. Same problem as the MZDM chat really.

Found this funky "spectral meld" thing in a friend's LJ. Wibbly. Mine's so orange its almost scary.

Actually, I was about to start spamming people I do like.

Heh... If you've been wondering where I've got to, I have a one-track mind and when something new gets my attention, it usually gets all of it. In this case it's Second Life, Nimilia dragged be into it at the beginning of the month and I was instantly hooked! Lots of fun, some issues but hey. Me be Cyall Akula on there, 3'10" pixie (the shortest I could get her), with waay too much interest in technology than is healthy for a nature spirit. I building a lot in game, often trying to make something I can sell but I've probably got a ways to go before I can make something that's going to earn me much, in-game. I'm a perfectionist, so it takes longer. ;) Not really, it's just a matter of learning stuff but for the area I'd most like to get into: aircraft, I've really got to write my own flight scripts instead of using the freebies available and it's going to be a long while before I can do that. The things that really sell for a lot in SL are big buildings and good furry avatars, I've got a skunk avi in the works but that's going to take a good deal of time. It's heading towards being a high-quality piece that I could easily charge top-of-the-line money for, which is a lot more than aircraft go for in-game, but it isn't easy to work on so it's slow progress. A pic I saw just now got me thinking of making a simpler furry for a bit of quick cash, as I can't afford to sink any RL money into the game and am in fact hoping to draw off a little pocket money from it eventually. I've got a little business going with a friend making buildings, they can go for a lot too but I'm not getting too excited about that yet, don't want to get carried away.

Mip, I'm making it all sound like work. It is perhaps a bit more work & less play than some things I could do but... I dunno, it's more satisfying this way. I do do a bit of building that I've got no plans on getting money for and that's mostly on my cottage. It's a tiny little alpine cottage, I got the shell as a freebie and I'm having fun fitting all I want into the interior. There's other stuff too, like the RPG with elves vs orcs, that was fun although I got involved mainly as a fighter on the side of the elves which was amusing because when they instituted a hitpoint system for it they only made it work for melee weapons, not ranged, so my pixie had to get up close and personal with the massively-built orcs! She's a crazy pixie.

Which OS are You?

I was momentarily insulted before I realised just how true that last bit is. It's a family thing, my mum and dad were both like it. I try not to be, but you've got to know where to stop to not be like that and I'm not very good at judging that. >_>;

It's a trait I frequently end up loathing in computer software and in gizmos (although it's sometimes done right), and I've developed an aversion to commercial applications as a result. I generally prefer to use a number of small tools to one that tries to do it all, anyway.

1: I have Asperger's Syndrome.
2: I used to be bishounen (and I can say that with a fair degree of confidence) when I was a teenager, but I really didn't appreciate the attention.
3: I'm not bishi any more.
4: I drive a converti ble - love the light, sun and wind.
5: I've never smoked.
6: I'm not good at troubleshooting, but most of my leisure time is taken up with computers.
7: Most of my social life is online.
8: I'm an active participant in the open Source Mage GNU/Linux distribution, to the extent of my ability.
9: This is the second-to-last line I'm dong in this meme and I'm starting to hate questions about myself. :)

NINE PLACES I'VE VISITED:
8: Chicago, Illinois - love it, would go again.
7: Dol de Bretagne, France - Ea... it's a town. Nice place to live, not particularly exciting to visit, although the company was good.
6: The Isle of Man (Irish Sea) - Hills (well, mountain), roads (^_^), wide spaces, little secret places, mist, sea...
5: The Isle of Purbeck (Dorset, England) - beautiful place: craggy hills in the western half and sea and heath in the eastern. The light is beautiful and the heather smells like honey in the springtime.
4: Eastern Scotland - This was quite exciting, with moon on snow & stuff, but the company was stressful and the landscape a little claustrophobic: mountains may be pretty (sometimes) but I don't like feeling hemmed in between them and trees.
3: The Sussex and Hampshere countryside - too close to home to really count, but deserves to be included with it's hills in the mist and sometimes remarkable light. (I should have been a painter.)
2: Hastings is worth a mention, it's an interestingly historical town that's kinda refreshing for some reason.
1: Ah... Buckingham Palace I guess. :)

EIGHT THINGS I WANT TO DO BEFORE I DIE:
8: LARP (At least once, to see what it's like)
7: Horse riding: not just once, I want to learn how to ride and ride regularly.

Mad inventor heaven

I'm a technophreak, not one who enthuses over the latest commercial gadgets but one who's fascinated by technological possibilities, especially if there's a possibility that I could assemble something that's both unique & useful to me. The following ramblings are all along those lines, please excuse the mad scientist factor in this post. Be warned that the more you read of this post the madder it gets. :)

Looking for embedded computing devices I came across this: http://www.taskit.de/en/products/portux/index.htm

It's a 180MHz computer that's about 4 inches by 3 inches with 64MB ram, 4-8MB of Flash, an SD card slot (1GB SD cards are affordable) and has Linux preinstalled. I wants it I does. :D

It is a little expensive, and for projects that don't require quite such a small size an old stripped-down laptop might be a better proposition, but laptops tend to require hard drives which are still somewhat motion-sensitive, I don't really know if you can safely run laptops with the screen completely disconnected (the backlight requires about 200 volts), and laptops aren't commonly equipped to function as USB host (computer) and usb client (printer, mouse, iPod etc) simultaneously. (The USB board for it brings the total size to 4x6 inches, although a smaller one could be made.)

Come to think of it most of those issues could be worked around. Hard drives can be replaced by USB memory sticks, the backlight power supply might not be a problem (it's a separate board on one laptop I've opened), and USB computer-to-computer leads are available (they act like back-to-back network adapters). A laptop stripped of it's drives, keyboard, screen and battery can be as small as 12x5x1 inches or even less so the size difference isn't too great. Laptops with broken screens do sell on eBay, they're not that cheap but I could still get more computing power for the price, I think.

Possibilities, possibilities, such is the fuel for the mad inventor's mind. :)

What triggered the search was thoughts of fitting an old but good (very good) car hi-fi with something to replace its defective CD player. The hi-fi sounds far better than the moderately expensive unit it was replaced with, and internally the CD player hardware connects via a single 30-way connector, giving me the idea of plugging mp3 playback hardware into that socket instead. (And also ogg vorbis playback, it's about twice as good as mp3 but not widely known.) It could be a little complicated, but I think there's a good many possibilities if I can decode the interface. Certainly I can use the CD-text functionality to display text, and I'm sure many of the controls (including the steering-column-mounted remote control) will signal the device inside and can be used for various things. With a small USB board (slightly smaller than this) that tiny computer would be small enough to fit within the car hi-fi itself, making a self-contained unit and adding convenience to the madness. :) I've just thought; a USB hub & some memory sticks could fit as well providing gigabytes of storage, this is almost getting scary. :)

Oh hell, browsing round round that site I see some cpu cores as compact flash cards with JavaVM or an option of uCLinux; the Linux PDA watch is almost starting to look feasible. O.o It would hardly be the first time Linux has been in a watch, I've heard of a 486 with 8MB of RAM & the X Window System being put into a watch by a professor somewhere a few years ago, but I'm talking about something I could hope to own. :) The technology's not quite there yet for me, a compact flash chard with a suitable LCD display on top (bearing in mind the core doesn't have LCD driver hardware) and a battery underneath would be just a little bit too bulky for a watch. A PDA watch isn't something I'd definitely get or make if I could (unless I had money to burn), but one thing that would be cool is if it had a headphone socket & mp3 capability. :)

Was reminded of Eliza earlier, the automated psychotherapist built into Emacs, the, er, "editor with everything." (It's extensible in Lisp, a language used for AI research, and was written by a chap who worked in an AI lab in case you're wondering why a text editor comes bundled with an automated psychotherapist. XD ) Anyways, here's the transcript of todays session:
